I would like to mention that most of the stuff I write on here is for future me to reference and look back on. That said, if you're reading this, you probably relate. Hopefully this helps.
Some days I wake up completely void of any motivation. Its not a good way to start your day because there is so much internal resistance to take any action that doesn't immediately excite me.
I think everyone has experienced this at least a handful of times. You are faced with two options:
- Embrace that you're having a bad day and write it off
- Power through it, hoping you'll get over it sooner than later
But there's an option that works 90% of the time, every time
Some days it does you good to simply call it a day and do something you like instead—maybe a hobby or some kind of creation work.
But there are days where you absolutely need to get shit done and getting back on track becomes a necessity.
When I feel the slump, I take inventory of what's causing me to feel this way. Poor sleep? A big task coming up that I absolutely do not look forward to? Maybe just kind of feeling lost? I recognize these feelings and thoughts. That's step 1.
Step 2 is easy:
What do I actually care about?
I take mental note about the things I care about in life. What are our goals? Are we closer to our goals than we were yesterday? Yes? Good. No? That's ok, we're still trending up. How much do we care about getting to the goals? Not much right now? That's ok, let's try doing a fun task. We care a lot that things get done sooner? Cool, what do we need to do?
Oh, we need to finish X so we can do Y to finally get to Z. Great. Let's try to do that. If that's really not fun rn, let's do something a little bit of fun and see if we change our mind.
90% of the time, I end up feeling better with much higher motivation than I started with.
(In fact this post is one of those "fun things" that I do when I'm low on motivation)
I think its got to do with the act of doing something
Or creating something. Personally, I love creating things. It drives me. Something I can make, and say "Look, I made this!". Immense satisfaction. Most of the things I make are for the hell of making things. Its fun. Its what we are designed to do, as far as I'm concerned.
I hope this helps!
